While 2 lobbies don't take that much space, it would be nice to be able to hide them as I'm not able to join them.

ALs are our priority currently. As with a Mumble required classic lobbies, we want to keep ALs are visible all the time to inspire players to join them. Also we have a plans to enable STV option for a spectators in ALs. Another reason to have them in a field of view.

I'm fairly new to competitive TF2, I don't meet the requirements for advanced lobbies, I'm not in a team and don't plan on joining one any time soon, so why do I still need to see them?

To have a chance to change your mind-set about ALs, get interested and more involved into comp TF2, don't forget about ALs when STV or AL live streams will be enabled. With a combination of a typical Filter settings based on a game type and region, you would usually get only 1 AL in your field of view. Not a big problem, I guess.
