I'm new to this, i admit, and i'm trying to spectate a few games to get a feel for them. However, i cannot figure out how to join a game once it has been launched. I read it should automatically connect me, but it isn't and there isn't a "join" option either.

Can anyone explain what i'm missing?

Refresh and look for the connect button if it isn't already there.

You can't spectate a game, you either play in it or your not part of it. I believe if your not in the lobby when it launches it either reroutes you to the main page, or simply doesn't give you the game info.
Why do mathematicians confuse Halloween and Christmas? Because 31 Oct = 25 Dec!

In order to spectate a game ask the server owner in game if they have STV on and what the address is.  Most people will have it on since they need it for matches and if they do will be willing to provide you with the address.  Using the Source TV address you will be able to spectate a match on a delay.
