This is exactly same idea. Need to be merged together. Better keep all similar ideas in one thread. All those small differences is a questions to be discussed in a single thread.

Merged threads and changed topic title to indicate there are 2 different topics discussed in this thread.

MaxMind has free downloadable country and city databases. PHP uses this for geoip, and there's a Java API.

But why not use Piwik, Open Web Analytics, or Google Analytics? These serve the purpose better, though the geoip database would be helpful for more accurate server locations.

I think the important thing for people to know is not where the lobby server is located, but how good their ping is to the server.

So instead of attempting to find actual ping, or display the server on a map, I'm proposing that we have a simple 4 bar solution based on IP location of the user that is shown alongside each lobby.

4 bars - location for both user and server is within same region (East Coast NA, West Coast NA, UK, Western Europe, Australia, etc...)

3 bars - location for both user and server spans two adjacent regions (East Coast/West Coast NA, Eastern Europe/Western Europe, Australia/New Zealand)

2 bars - location spans across regions (East Coast NA/UK)

1 bar - location spans further than previous bars (Australia/UK, West Coast/Eastern Europe, etc.)

This is the basic concept. Implementation could be via region detection, or set distances for each tier.

I think this has changed a fair bit from the original idea but what jay said does seem like a good idea

Only problem I see with this is, East coast to west coast NA is a lot slower in connection speed between Eastern Europe and Western Europe for example purely because of the size of that damm country.

True. Easily fixed by adding a a central NA region though.

This would be good for dem texans as well. Also maybe one of the Aussies could tell us what the ping between West/East Australia and New Zealand is like?

Or how bout having a 1 time window popup asking the player to select their region, maybe even their coutry and/or explaining that they´re better of joining lobbies in their region?

Sure you get a notification when you join a lobby out of your region but I don´t know what happens if you don´t select a region on your steam acc. Recently I opened a lobby around midnight CEST and the ENTIRE enemy team was having a ping of 100+ in addition to having a low amount of lobbies played.

A region feature itself is nice but why do you have it connected to settings on your steam acc? It´s pointless to enforce a lock when it´s so easy to just change it as you please. Having that process on center prevents that, allowing the region feature to actually function as it´s supposed to.
