I've been around 4 some time, and at some point I got a myself trade.tf account

The thing is:

Trade.tf has bots that send u a message when there's something u want for sell/sale, so, I thought center could do something like that, that would tell the player when a certain game is available for him to play, according to his preferences like: mains, location, type, map, etc..

P.S. If this becomes something real, commands should be added to stop the bot (because in trade.tf it kinda becomes annoying to be constantly receiving messages)

This was discussed somewhere, but I can't seem to find the original thread.

It would be interesting, but since it isn't necessary the core dev team won't focus on that. I think some other staff members were considering making this a thing, it depends on what kind of demand there is.

I was considering making it, but I'm not sure if the demand is actually there.

Sounds like a donator perk.

+1 (unless only as a donor perk, then -1 since donating to get something is not really donating but actually purchasing)

It's fair enough if people want to put their money into the site that they get some kind of nice reward.

Something similar was discussed beforehand about bots notifying users to ready up to coincide with the booming Heavy voice (which I personally felt would be far too little bang for the developer's buck). This sounds a little more valuable, as I use a service called Gameranger to play Star Wars Battlefront 2 online because of Gamespy's recent closure, and it notifies me whenever a new SWBF2 lobby opens, which is rather helpful if I'm not active in Gameranger.

It does have value, but I also expect the devs not to prioritize it, at least at the moment.

That's fine, as long as it is no longer called donating since donating for the sake of receiving some kind of reward is not donating at all.

Yes it is. Giving them extra perks is our way of thanking them for their contribution to the project.

No,  it is a way of getting more people to "donate"(Buy something) because they don't really want to donate at all but just want the "perks"(things they are buying).

But whatever their mindset is behind their choice, they are contributing to the TF2 Center project and as a result should be rewarded for their contribution. It doesn't matter if they only seek the perks, the mentality behind each transaction, whether intentional or not, is to offer their free money to the service. To repay them, we therefore give them said perks.

Right, and there is nothing inherently wrong with that.  What I am saying is that if that is the case it should not be called donating, because a donation is something you give to a person/organization/entity while receiving nothing in return.

Whether they're doing it out of good will or simply to earn the perks, they are still giving away their free money to the project, which is all that really should matter in this case. I would therefore justify it as a donation, with the perks as our way of saying thank you for their actions.

I don't think you understand what donation means.

It's not free money if the "donor" is getting something in return.  Or maybe I'm wrong and I've been donating a lot of money to Amazon and all the things they send me are just "perks" I guess.

As someone who is in their second year of Creative Writing and has handled donations both on a Garry's Mod server and has raised money for facilities before in real life, I am actually cognizant with the definition of donation, thank you very much.

By free money I mean it's their money they choose to spend on recreational goods, and they are instead opting to use it to contribute to the project. We're not analysing their thought process and saying "Well he's only doing it for the benefits that a donator gains, so he's clearly not keen to help us out and is only in it for the rewards." Every donation is taken seriously and handled the same way; a user gives away their money which directly contributes to the running of the website, which results in us thanking them with giving them perks. By doing this, we appeal to both those who which to donate out of the good of their heart, and those who simply want the perks, and treat them both the same for their actions instead of assessing what a user's intentions are.

So figuratively for some users, it may not entirely be donating, but for others, it actually may be. We'd rather not alienate either party and hit a middle ground so we can obtain as many donations are possible.

I doubt someone would donate to buy the perks we have in mind. They're neat, but not something anyone would want to actually buy.

Well this thread is about the bot.  I would pay to get the bot feature to tell me when a lobby I want to play opens up.  I would also donate to the site if there were donations.  I however would not pay to get the bot if if were only being supplied to donors and it was being called a donation instead of what it really is "a purchase" simply because of the fact that I would find that to be a misleading method of collecting money (by association I would not donate either.)

The perks like colored names or a donor icon/badge are one thing because you are not paying for a functional service, like the bot would be, but donating and being recognized for it (there is a difference.)
