Hello, I got into lobbies not too long ago, and I love playing pyro. One problem I hear is that people dislike any flamethrower that is NOT the degreaser. I understand why, but I've gotten extremely used to stock. Now, a lot of people may say I'm a W + M1 noob or whatever, but I often utilize compression blast to put enemies in uncomfortable positions then I burn them to death. I puff 'n' sting with the flare gun quite often for a stock user, but I've gotten used to it to a degree where the fast weapon switch on the degreaser would probably just throw me off. I also use the powerjack, but I don't use it as a combo tool that much.

The reason most people think you should be using the degreaser is because the meta for the pyro now is basically:

Degreaser

Flare gun/reserve shooter

powerjack (Was axetinguisher until it was nerfed)

There's nothing wrong with using the normal flamethrower, it's just recommended to use the degreaser because you can react faster.

Is it just me, or is it that the degreaser switch time makes it hard to light people on fire.

I agree with icy. I've gotten used to stock to a degree where it's basically just that.

A lot of times people say that to play pyro you have to use the degreaser.

This was done with the backburner (the teams were sorta stacked) but this still shows that you don't need the degreaser to play pyro.

I would recommend practicing with the degreaser now and again and just ease yourself into using it more. Considering that most pyros puff and sting it's a straight upgrade to the stock flamethrower.

I main med and when I first started playing med I was using the overdose/syringe gun and using the crossbow felt extremely weird but I just swapped between them every once in a while and now I'm pretty good with the crossbow and recently I'm starting to pull off consistent airshots onto enemies and players so I assume that's a sign of improvement (or maybe it's just luck I dunno).

Anyway my point is if you're serious about playing pyro in comp it would be kind of expected of you to use degreaser because due to the way comp pyro is always played it's just better than any other primary.

Clearly nobody in this thread has ever played TF2, let alone pyro. The OBVIOUS choice for pyro is the Phlog. All the pros use it, so you should too ya dingus.

Seriously though, if your pyro playstyle is to Light somebody on fire, airblast them away, and then hit them your shotgun/reserve shooter/flare gun, you're better off with the Degreaser in most situations.

Should have linked to this one if you were looking to claim a point, Tury. http://logs.tf/417555

Anyways, degreaser shines in versatility in many situations and its minute weakness in comparison to the stock for most people. If you can exploit the strengths of the stock/backburner/phlog/degreaser, you stand a better shot of using the one that you know how to exploit the strengths of. Exploiting the strengths of the degreaser is pretty easy. The others are a bit tougher generally. Even on top of that, the degreaser's strengths don't really fall off over time, so people who were good with it pushed farther with it as they could. The other strengths kinda fall off after a certain point, though they remain impactful if you keep pushing it.

Degreaser just works really well though, and that's why most people run it. If someone gets mad at you and you're doing bad with stock, chances are you're not going to do any better with the degreaser. If you're doing good with stock, why would they complain?

This advice is sound for lobbies but if you ever wanted to join a proper team and you were trialled and the leader noticed you using the stock weapon then they'd quite rightly think something was amiss.

Opposite for me.

I find the stock flamethrower has its uses. If you know you're gonna be hugging a sentry, why not go for the extra damage? You're not going to be combo'ing an uber as it comes at you, and spycicle / DR spies go down that bit quicker.
