Hey

Server is hosted in Australia.

But the IP range is being identified in USA

So when i create a lobby it comes up NA when it's actually for AUS

Wondering if it's possible to politely and non-demanding request an exception for that specific IP be made?

Or some other solution.

Thanks in advance.

Raph

Basically we're using a pretty bad geolocator for the moment, but that'll change eventually.

I just posted this hit post topic and I don't see the thread here wtf?

Anyways.... I guess a new feature was implemented that says where a server is located?

It auto tagged my server as "New_York."

My server is in Los Angeles, CA, thousands of miles from NY.  My friends Dallas, TX server is getting Chicago tagged.

Just wanted to share that this appears to be bugged.

Mine is 192.210.193.143:27015

Don't know what my friends Dallas servers IP is off the top of my head but I can check later...  It's hosted by NFO though.  You could probably pretty easily find it in the lobby logs, as we both host a lot of ultiduo lobbies.  We played last night on his Dallas server around maybe 10-11PM PST give or take a couple hours.

In my experience Dallas server IPs tend to not have a location until manually put into the database.. this happened multiple times to me.

My question is how are the locations for the IP's being looked up?  WHOIS info?

Some sort of Geolocation service is being used. Which one in specific, I'm not exactly sure.

I don't know a whole lot about IP address and the locations for them, however I found this interesting:

http://whois.domaint...192.210.193.143

That's my IP for my Los Angeles server.  It lists New York in the top area, and strangely lists an IP range that is close, but my IP doesn't fall in that range.  If you go down below and look at the correct range, it does list Los Angeles.  So is it possible that whatever query is being run to lookup the info is grabbing the wrong info from the wrong IP range?

The Geolocator TF2C uses is kinda bad, but free. Eventually, when we get Donations rolling, we'll get a better one.

GeoIPtool, Maxmind and iplocation.net all report that IP as registered to the NY area. If the provider messes up there isn't a lot we can do. hop-tracing maybe?

So perhaps the feature should be disabled for the time being?  Or maybe a smaller database could be manually made which has correct locations for the IP's for servers that commonly host lobbies on TF2C.

I just don't want people in the NY area joining my server which is tagged NY, but is in California joining thinking "yay im going to have 20 ping..." and turns out they have 120.  :P

Or maybe you could have a server location field on the create lobby page and make it so you can't create the lobby until that field is filled in.

I would like to suggest that the location feature be turned off.  It is incorrect 75% of the time.  I see severs all the time that say Los Angeles and are really in Chicago.  Or Dallas texas servers that say los angeles, new york servers that are actually in LA etc.

Is there any stats behind 75%? Or is it just how it seems? I'm not asking for the sake of being condescending.

While there are (significant) issues in the US, it seems to be working fairly well in the rest of the world. Eventually, TF2C will get a better Geolocator, but for now it's not really possible.

I've not been keeping stats, but I honestly feel that 75% is not an exaggeration.  I know that my server, my friends severer as well as most (if not all) of the serveme.tf servers I've used are incorrectly reported.

I've had a couple times where I hosted a lobby on  Los Angeles server that stated New York in the title, and had people leave right away due to the 100 ping they had.  I'll try to post some stats of the next 10 servers I play in.
