Hello!

So, recently I've been seeing a lot of lobbies where people aren't sure how to set up the server and use the commands. I would like to know myself, in fact. So, I figured it'd be nice if someone were able to make a guide of some sort to let the newbies of the site know how, from renting a server to what all the 'Create Lobby' options mean.

Thanks!

It's actually pretty straight forward since tf2center actually does all the configs on the server.  All you need is your server IP and your rcon password, both of which you should be able to find in the web control panel provided by your server rental company (I don't know exactlty what all rental companies do but nfoservers has a setup tab where you can set rcon)  it should be able to also be found (and changed) using the cfg files in the server through ftp.  They key is to make sure that the map you want to play is loaded onto the server if it is a custom map ... I'm also not sure if the TF2center config sets sv_pure 2 or not since that is usually done in an autoconfig.cfg on the server and not through rcon (maybe somebody from the site could answer this).  If nobody beats me to it I can go into more detail later about how to find this information (and change it through ftp) as well as where to put custom maps, don't have the time to do so right now.

Maybe this is not what you are asking, if you refer to the site itself then I don't understand the question since there is really only one 'Create Lobby' option and you from there you choose between 6v6 or 9v9 and which league configs you would perfer to use.

Also you should not have to use any server commands to create a lobby, TF2center does all of that for you.

If this answer is way off from what you are looking for maybe we could get some specifics of what you are asking ... (I especially don't understand the part about all the 'create lobby' options since there really aren't any.

Well, if you are renting the server from someone who provides the hosting:

They should let you change the rcon password from their online panel. From there you can go into rcon and configure the server. You should also use the online panel of the host to put the config and whitelist files on the server, and the maps. From there, you should be good to go.

If you are hosting it yourself on a server, it's quite a bit more involved so I won't go into that.

There is no config required. However whitelists are recommended, and maps too.

It might be a good idea to have a paragraph in the FAQ on how to setup servers, even if it isn't too difficult. I would do it, but I'm really not qualified.

Out of beta, there is going to be a Home Page for TF2Center with a huge infographic with all the information on how to join lobbies and create lobbies. The FAQ I have been working on does have a section devoted to creating a lobby etc.

There are settings you should have which aren't in the configs.  Here are some:

sv_downloadurl "http://dl.tragicservers.com/" // or some other map repository, enables fastdl
sv_pausable 0 // disallow pauses
sv_allow_votes 0 // disallow voting
mp_timelimit 999 // don't cycle map while waiting for lobby to fill; soap-dm has issues with 0
mp_idledealmethod 0 // don't kick idle players or force them to spec
