My friend can't play tf2 because he keeps getting this error @ launch

He's tried verifying cache and completely reinstalling tf2 several times. He doesn't have any custom files, he didn't even have a custom folder in \tf\, so he tried creating the directory \team fortress 2\tf\custom\maps with empty folders to see if that will fix it. That stopped the error message from popping up, but he still cant launch tf2 (it just freezes in the background and refuses to launch).
Any ideas? Thanks in advance
EDIT: Disregard, apparently -autoconfig fixed it for him (even though he didn't have a custom autoexec). Oh well, at least it's working.
